If you thought we’d gone off the boil since our last Freedom Leisure update, well you’d be wrong!  The inter-ex team have been working hard behind the scenes to develop a user-friendly method for implementing the Critical Power concept in centres around East Sussex.  The Hailsham centre is currently launching this collaboration between Freedom Leisure and the University of Brighton, and it shouldn’t be long before the piloted scheme will extend to other centres in the area.

How is the scheme being launched?

This month, Martin, Jeanne and Kerry (and two terrific under-graduate students) travelled to Hailsham’s Freedom Leisure site to train the staff who work in the gyms.  The staff members were presented with:

  • the vision behind the scheme Image
  • a brief introduction to the Critical Power concept
  • a practical demonstration of how the scheme will be implemented

The Hailsham centre staff are now equipped with the knowledge of Critical Power (or Speed) determination, for anybody exercising on the Treadmill, Bike or Rower.

The software is in place to do the tricky sums and all that’s left is to get exercising!

What next?

The University of Brighton and Freedom Leisure are in continuous contact with one another and the next step is for the centre staff to become familiar with Critical Power determination procedures.  They will receive support from the inter-ex team as they test themselves on the gym equipment, and before long we hope to see many of their gym members working at a Critical Level!

Watch this space for the Critical Powers and Speeds of local East Sussex gym-goers.  Perhaps you can challenge yourself to “beat your neighbour”!
